Our Solar System
A Short Essay for Beginning Readers
What Is the Solar System?
The Solar System is a group of planets and other space objects that travel around the Sun. The Sun is a big, bright star at the center of our Solar System. It gives us light and warmth.
The Planets
There are eight planets in the Solar System. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Each planet is different. Some planets are big, and some are small. Some are close to the Sun, and some are far away.
Our Home, Earth
Earth is the third planet from the Sun. It is the only planet where people, animals, and plants live. Earth has water, air, and land.
Other Space Objects
Besides planets, there are moons, asteroids, and comets in the Solar System. Moons go around planets. Asteroids are small rocks that move around the Sun. Comets are icy objects that sometimes have long tails.
Why Is the Solar System Special
